Tembea · Kampala, serving all Uganda
Hire us to know about any town or city.
That is the service. Tembea (Swahili for “walk around and explore”) hires trusted experts
who live in towns across Uganda. You send a request through the chat on this page,
we route it to our expert on-site in that town or city, and they answer, or go and check,
or do it for you, from real lived experience, with real photos as proof.

The service, plainly
Know about any town or city before you go.
Requests come in through the site chat and get routed to our experts on-site in that town or city, who answer from real lived experience. Two kinds of request, one door:
Ask, know the town or city before you go
Where do families actually eat? Which streets feel safe at night? What is a place really like beyond its listing photos? Ask in the chat and our expert in that town or city answers from having lived it, with honest notes and real photos.
Ask anythingAnswered by a localReal photos
Ask us to check or do, we go, we handle it
Need eyes and hands in the town or city, not just answers? Our expert goes in person, checks whether a restaurant is open and what prices are like today, visits a hotel or venue before you book, buys and delivers something local, or runs an errand across town, and sends photo proof when it is done.

Ask, or ask us to check or do
Ask: “What is this town or city like before I go?” Check or do: “Is that restaurant open, what are prices today? Visit that hotel for me. Buy this and deliver it. Run this errand.” Both start in the chat.

Your request finds its expert

An honest answer from lived experience, or the task done, with real photos as proof. You know the town or city before you go, without having to be there first.
Why businesses choose Tembea
Because a local answer sounds different.
The chat connects you to a person, not a script. Here is how a question travels:

Example report
See what a report looks like in Gulu
Our local in Gulu sat down in three places this week, ordered what people actually eat, and wrote it straight. No polishing. This is the kind of note our clients get before they travel.
Mama Layibi Luwombo Kitchen, Layibi
Chicken luwombo
The chicken was soft and the groundnut sauce had real depth, proper home taste. It took almost 30 minutes to come out, so do not order it when you are rushing.

Pece Fish Point, Pece
Grilled tilapia with kachumbari and chips
The tilapia was fresh and smoky with nice crisp skin, and the kachumbari was sharp and fresh. The chips arrived lukewarm though, so ask for yours straight from the pan.

Opio Rolex Stand, Main Street near the market

Chapati was soft and fresh off the pan and the eggs were generous, it fills you up fast. There was a bit too much raw onion for me, I would ask for less next time.

Work with us
Come and do joyful work with us.
We hire locals who become the person our chat routes to for their town. Mukono is where a client needs us most right now.
Why Mukono, why now? A client wants to know Mukono before they go there, the food, the streets, the places worth their time. That is exactly what our locals do, and Mukono is the town where we urgently need ours. If Mukono is your home ground, our chat is waiting for your application.

Training manual
Read it once, properly. It is short, and it is the whole job in four parts.
1. Taking good photos
Clients decide with their eyes, so your photos carry the report.
Wipe the lens first. A clean lens is half the job.
Use daylight when you can. Stand with the light behind you, facing the place, so the photo comes out bright and clear.
Keep the phone steady. Rest your elbows on something solid if your hands shake.
Take one wide photo that shows the whole place, then close photos of the details that matter.
Keep the horizon straight. A tilted photo looks careless even when the work was good.
For food:
Shoot from the side at table level, then one more from above. Show the full portion, not just a corner of the plate.
Photograph the menu or the price board too, so the prices in your message match what you saw.
Skip the flash indoors. It makes good food look tired.
For places:
Photograph the entrance and the street outside, so the client can picture arriving.
Photograph anything you mention in your message: the sign, the seating, the view, and any problem you spotted.
2. Writing clear messages to clients
Short, honest, specific. Say what you saw, what it costs, and what you think.
Always include prices. "Lunch was USh 18,000" beats "lunch was affordable" every time.
Answer the question that was asked first, then add one useful extra at most.
If you do not know yet, say so, and say when you will check. Never guess.
Warm and plain, like talking to a neighbour. No stiff, formal language.
A good message sounds like this: "I visited at 1pm today. The place was half full, service took about 10 minutes, and the chicken luwombo was USh 18,000. Worth it if you are not in a hurry."
3. Handling receipts
Photograph every receipt, every time, before you leave the place.
Lay it flat, in good light, with all four corners in the frame. The photo must be readable without zooming.
Check that the date, the place, and the total are all visible. If anything is cut off, take it again.
Send the photo to the team the same day, with one line saying what it was for.
Keep the paper receipts together in one envelope until the team confirms your expense is settled.
4. Your pay and benefits, explained
You are paid every week by mobile money, straight to the wallet you chose when you applied.
We send your pay ahead of time, so you can get started without waiting on money.
Weekly pay is USh 282,500 in total: base pay USh 200,000, lunch allowance USh 50,000, and transport allowance USh 32,500.
The lunch allowance covers a simple local lunch on working days. The transport allowance covers your local trips around town for work.
Paid food tasting is separate. When the job sends you to taste, that money is a work expense and never comes out of your pay.
Performance bonuses land monthly, between USh 50,000 and USh 150,000, based on happy clients, finished checks, and honest reports sent on time.
Health cover starts after the first month, up to USh 300,000 a year.
If a real emergency hits, you can ask for a mobile-money advance of up to USh 100,000.
Sundays and public holidays are paid rest days. Your pay never shrinks for resting.
